Course Outline:
Create a Communicative Classroom – Learn to:
* Understand and work with language learning levels
* Observe teaching methods in action
* Explore the concept of communicative grammar teaching
* Discover aspects of English pronunciation, word stress, and sentence stress
* Explore the uses of multimedia in the language classroom
* Discover the nuts and bolts of teaching: needs analysis, syllabus design, and lesson planning
* Engage in an English language teaching practicum.
* Learn how to apply for jobs as an English language teacher
* Learn how to navigate other aspects of living and working abroad. Get answers to these questions:

1) Create a Communicative Classroom – Learn to:
* Create “getting-to-know-you” activities to cultivate a relaxed learning environment, and to break down the affective barriers to language learning.
* Create a student-centred classroom by de-constructing the hierarchy between teachers and students.
* Reverse the roles of teacher / students so that the students speak more than the teacher.
* Learn how to create a student-lead syllabus while still guiding them as the teacher.
* Use subtle forms of error correction that do not interrupt or limit students’ flow or undermine their confidence .

2) Understand and work with language learning levels
* Become familiar with the Canadian Benchmark system to determine student proficiency levels and learn to design teaching / testing materials for all levels.
* Learn how to incorporate grammar into your lessons in accordance with all levels of proficiency.

3) Observe teaching methods in action
* Observe the Communicative Model in action with an experienced and demonstrative ESL teacher.
* Discuss and differentiate the difference between English classes for adults, teens and children.
* Experience how the communicative method works by taking a short class in a foreign language you have never been exposed to before.
* Experience what it is like to be both a beginner and to teach to a beginner’s class.

4) Explore the concept of communicative grammar teaching
* Review the basics of grammar and learn how to teach all grammar points effectively in the International English language classroom.
* Analyze and learn how to develop different tasks to facilitate natural usage of particular grammar points in both controlled and free practice learning circumstances.

5) Discover aspects of English pronunciation, word stress, and sentence stress
* Learn how to create drills to hone students’ pronunciation and to help them distinguish etween similar sounds.
* Learn how to describe English sounds in both theoretical and practical terms.
* Learn how to help your students focus on the rhythm of English by using poems, chants, and songs in the international English language classroom.
* Create games and communicative activities that facilitate pronunciation practice. 6) Explore the uses of multimedia in the language classroom
* Learn how to create lessons that make use of all aspects of music and song; i.e., vocabulary, pronunciation, intonation, current usage, literary styles, discussion, et al.
* Consider the most effective way to use of video in the classroom.
* Become familiar with CALL, Computer Assisted Language Learning.

7) Discover the nuts and bolts of teaching: needs analysis, syllabus design, and lesson planning
* Learn how to identify and design curriculum suited to students’ functional language needs.
* Learn to accommodate students’ diverse learning styles by creating lesson plans in a variety of modes and patterns.

8) Engage in a teaching practicum
* Work with a team to design and deliver a unit plan based on assigned pages from an actual English language text book in current use .
* Become a self-reflective teacher by analyzing the outcome of your lesson plan.
* Present a practice lesson showing how you would exploit certain aspects of the text material, giving reasons for omissions and augmentation of the text.
* Get guidance from your instructor and constructive feedback from your colleagues.

9) Learn how to apply for jobs as an English language teacher
* Find out where the jobs are, and the differences in contracts and language teaching contexts in various parts of the world.
* Learn how to focus your cover letter and resume for the international marketplace.
* Discover how to understand and negotiate a contract.
* Gain useful tips for telephone interviews, for getting letters of reference, and for your application photograph.

10) Learn how to navigate other aspects of living and working abroad; Get answers to these questions:
* What should I pack, and how should I dress?
* What is a non-resident for tax purposes?
* How do I get overseas health coverage?
* What documentation do I need before going (work visas, immunization records, etc.)?
* How can I deal effectively with my own culture shock when I go overseas?
