1) What is the difference! TEFL, TESL, TESOL …
TEFL stands for Teaching English as a Foreign Language. TESL stands for
Teaching English as a Second Language, TESOL is an umbrella over the
previous two covering any student that is not a native speaker of English.
It stands for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. It is
more common in North America and large state sector colleges in Britain.
2) Do I need to take a course or can I get a job without it?
Yes and no - it is possible to get a job in some countries without a
certificate, it is not recommended, since these are usually lower paying
jobs. English has become the preferred second language and the international
business language. As the demand for English is more critical, so too
has the demand for formal qualifications.
3) Do I need to know the language of the country I wish to teach in?
NO! Only English is spoken. I will teach you the Communicative approach
to teaching English. Most schools do not want you to speak the local
language in the class as speaking only English accelerates the learning
process. You might want to learn a phrase or two to get along in your
new environment! Note that a bonus to teaching English in a foreign
country is that you can learn a new language FREE!
4) What are the prerequisites for taking your course?
The only prerequisites for TEFL certification are that you be 18 years
of age with a grade 12 diploma and are a native English speaker of English,
or that you possess first language proficiency in English. If you do
have a college diploma or an undergraduate degree or any other kind of
special diploma, you can acquire more lucrative contracts.
* In Canada, most directors request that you have the longer TESL certificate, as well as a B.Ed. or a B.A. The longer TESL Canada accredited TESL Certificate, requires that you have completed a B.A. from an accredited university.
5) Is there an age limit?
No. I teach many retired adults who have decided they’re not ready
for retirement, take the TEFL course and off they go! I also teach 18
year olds who take the course then go and get paid to teach English while
they learn Spanish in their off time!
6) How long are the contracts for?
Not all schools work on a contract basis. Some hire on a freelance basis.
Those schools offering contracts typically offer a six month to a one
year contract. Others, usually summer programs, offer contracts for one
to four months.
7) How much can I expect to earn?
It is often easier to suggest how much you can save than how much you
can earn, as the numbers can be misleading in foreign currency. For example
in Japan the minimum salary is 250 000 yen a month! Converted this is
approximately $3,800. Can. Therefore it is easier to say you can save
as much as $20, 000. a year.
8) Do I need teaching experience?
No. It is my mandate to help you gain the knowledge and experience you
will need. This is precisely the purpose of the certification process.
9) What do I need to bring to the course?
I will supply you with all the materials and textbooks needed. Just bring
a pencil or a pen!
10) Will I receive help in getting a job?
Yes. In fact, you will become a lifetime member of the online alumni
support centre and I will continue to help you throughout your career,
no matter where you are in the world.
I am in contact with recruiters and directors all over the world! Where are you interested in traveling to? South America, Central America, Asia, Eastern, and Western Europe?!
I am not just here to help you find that dream job either. What about a hand when you are overseas and out of ideas! A short email message is often enough to get you back in the swing
11) When will I receive my TEFL certificate?
Certificates are awarded on the last day of the TEFL Certificate course
at our short but very sweet graduation ceremony!
